Collins Aerospace is a technology and market leader, providing submarine life support from design and manufacturing to testing and aftermarket support. We supply oxygen generation, atmospheric monitoring and airborne contaminant removal systems for every operational class of U.S. submarines. As a strong partner of the U.S. Navy, our expertise, reliability and safety are recognized worldwide.
We produce and provide aftermarket support for the Advanced Integrated Low Pressure Electrolyzer (AILPE), Integrated Low Pressure Electrolyzer (ILPE) and Low Pressure Electrolyzer (LPE) oxygen generation units. All three of our units use a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolysis Cell stack to produce low pressure oxygen via electrolysis of water. They provide automatic, unattended operation with easy-to-use operator interfaces built into the units and automatic shut-down features. The high oxygen generation rates and unattended operation are marked improvements over previous oxygen generation technology.
Collins CAMS IIA is a third-generation submarine analyzer, improving on more than 40 years of successful CAMS fleet service. Our CAMS IIA uses mass spectrometry and near infrared technology to monitor major atmospheric constituents (H2O, CO2, N2, O2), common atmospheric contaminants (H2, CO) and other components of interest (refrigerants and shipboard solvents). Collins CAMS IIA is based on the same inherently reliable engineering approach that has given our CAMS Mk I a documented operational availability of over 99 percent after more than five million unit hours of operation by the U.S. Navy.
The Advanced Carbon Dioxide Removal Unit (ACRU) produced by Collins is the first new CO2 technology since the inception of the nuclear submarine fleet in 1955. It has a 40 percent higher CO2 removal rate and lower energy consumption within the same size requirements as the previous scrubber and burner units. ACRU uses a new solid amine system for CO2 removal that removes the concerns of corrosion and maintenance associated with liquid amine in the older systems, and it’s more environmentally friendly.
