Sustainability at Collins Aerospace
We innovate for – and with – our customers to drive more sustainable solutions that solve unique business challenges and pave a better path for the industry and our planet. Across the industry, suppliers, airframers, airlines and allies are all advancing new and expanded efforts in sustainability, and many look to Collins Aerospace for technologies and solutions to help meet lofty goals. Together, we can seize new opportunities – and rise to the responsibility.
In October 2021, Collins Aerospace signed the Air Transportation Action Group's declaration to Fly Net Zero by 2050.
In 2019, we joined 23 other leaders in aerospace, research organizations and associations across Europe to sign the Clean Sky 2 Joint Declaration of European Aviation Research Stakeholders to lead the way toward the decarbonization of aviation by 2050. In 2021, we signed the Letter of Intent (LoI) to join as a Founding Member of the currently forming Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking.
As part of a unique, long-term collaboration with Airbus, Emirates Airlines, GE Aviation and Thales, and in partnership with the Dubai Future Foundation, we co-created Aviation X Lab to focus on technological innovations in aviation, including those enabling the next era of sustainable air travel.
Research & development
Each year, we invest more than $3 billion in R&D to deliver the industry’s most advanced products and services to our customers. By pairing this mission with our steadfast commitment to creating a more sustainable aviation industry, we align product development to principles.
We start with the best and brightest ideas that push the limits of current capabilities and ask: What’s next?
That’s the question our new Applied Research & Technology Team will be asking about a number of critical issues facing the aviation industry. Starting with sustainability.
Part of the team’s mandate is to help accelerate enterprisewide efforts to create more environmentally responsible technologies, from lighter materials and more efficient alternative power sources to technologies that optimize aircraft flight path and fuel burn. And, because our employees are some of the best problem-solvers out there, the team created a new crowdsourcing tool to make it easier for employees to collaborate and share solutions around sustainability and other strategic challenges.
In other R&D news:
- We’ve invested $26M through 2023 in support of two programs at the Collins Ratier site in France for the development of next-generation propellers.
- Collins made an $18M investment in a research program to develop “smart” actuation components for both commercial airplanes and helicopters. (See Integrated Solutions)
So we’re not just talking big when it comes to sustainability – we’re making it fly.
Sustainability in flight
We bring our commitment to sustainability to life at every level.
We are amplifying and accelerating our efforts to create more environmentally responsible technologies, from lighter materials and more efficient electric systems to technologies that optimize flight paths and fuel burn. And on the ground, we are setting aggressive goals to reduce our environmental footprint across our facilities and supply chain partners. Explore how we’re not just talking big when it comes to sustainability – we’re making it fly.
From our perspective, a more connected ecosystem—one that offers seamless connectivity, improved operations and an enhanced experience for all stakeholders—is essential if aviation is to become more sustainable. Not just in the near-term, but for generations to come.
Alternative Power Sources
We’re bringing our vision for more sustainable flight to life by investing in breakthrough technologies and capabilities that can revolutionize the industry. And to do that, we need to understand and explore every option.
At Collins Aerospace, we don’t just have our eyes on a more sustainable future. We’re building it every day. Through forward-thinking design and science-based materials selection, we’re working to reduce aircraft weight for greater fuel efficiency, as well as employ more environmentally responsible materials in aircraft components.
With the right perspective, we can see past traditional boundaries and uncover new opportunities to make aerospace more sustainable. At Collins Aerospace, that perspective comes from a holistic view of the aircraft and our position as a provider of components across all aspects of flight.
Our environmental impact and manufacturing processes
At Collins Aerospace, we work diligently to improve our operations in ways that reduce energy usage and emissions and preserve our natural resources. We’ve made significant progress in recent years, and we continue to set aggressive goals moving forward.
