Collins Aerospace’s Composite Center of Excellence is at the forefront of filament winding technology, specializing in precise fiber placement techniques and innovating new technology in joining metals to composites. Transmission systems benefit from our patented metal-to-carbon composite joining technology to deliver an overall low weight solution.

Transmission shafts

Collins Aerospace Crompton Technology Group (CTG) transmission shafts provide a lightweight alternative to metal. These transmission shafts are extremely strong, which allows them to be scalable. The result is a reduction in parts and additional weight savings.

Using our patented joining technology, the transmission shafts are on the Airbus A330, A340, A350, A380 and A400M, as well as the Bombardier C-Series, the Boeing 787 and the Joint Strike Fighter F-35.

TORQdiscs and universal joints

Collins TORQdiscs are lightweight composite flexible couplings used in power transmission applications, especially within the actuation systems of aircraft wings.

The assembly provides lower weight than an equivalent crowned spline joint, a reduction in system axial loads. This is a result of compliance, zero maintenance, zero backlash, low power loss, low wear, high fatigue resistance and fast, flexible installation. TORQdiscs are fully scalable for different torque requirements. This technology is currently featured on the Bombardier CSeries.
