Collins Aerospace’s ARINC Rail Solutions to deliver ‘big data’ capabilities to NJ TRANSIT

  • Updating TMAC and SCADA systems with improved monitoring tools
  • Three-year contract builds on existing 20-year working relationship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Dec. 6, 2019) – NJ TRANSIT has awarded the ARINC rail solutions team at Collins Aerospace Systems a three-year contract to replace its Train Management and Control (TMAC) and Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) Systems. These systems are the main command and control platforms for NJ TRANSIT’s entire operating area, providing real-time monitoring and control under normal and emergency conditions. They are being upgraded to include Positive Train Control (PTC) functionality, enhanced reporting features, new interfaces to external systems and increased data capacity. Collins Aerospace is a business unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Through ARINC’s Advanced Information Management (AIM®) rail system, NJ TRANSIT will receive a modern platform design to meet the monitoring and control requirements of its commuter rail operations. In addition, the platform is expandable so it can easily accommodate future rail line extensions via its added data capacity and enhanced interfaces to external systems. The new platform will not only provide new functionalities for the system administrator and Centralized Traffic Control (CTC) and SCADA dispatchers, it also will include an information repository for selected real-time data available to users and customers outside the control centers.

“We’ll be applying our state-of-the-art technology and business practices to NJ TRANSIT’s rail operations to enhance operational efficiency, stability, reliability and security, along with providing a foundation for future growth,” said Eric Pelli, director of Rail Systems for Collins Aerospace. “As the industry leader in transit and commuter dispatch systems, we have been helping NJ TRANSIT continuously improve its operations and performance over the past 20 years.”

Work for this major system replacement contract will be conducted at NJ TRANSIT’s dispatch center in Kerney, NJ. NJ TRANSIT – which is the nation's third-largest provider of bus, rail and light rail transit, links major points in New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia. NJ TRANSIT’s fleet consists of more than 1,300 rail vehicles. It operates more than 650 weekday revenue trains and 317 weekend revenue trains, providing its riders with 2.1 billion annual passenger miles.
