Collins Aerospace awarded four-year contract by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Board for information management modernization project

  • Multi-year project will help modernize New York City subway
  • Collins will develop intelligence-based computer system for improved visibility and enhanced decision making

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Feb. 25, 2019) – Collins Aerospace has been awarded a 53-month, $68 million firm fixed price contract by the board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to serve as the prime contractor for an MTA New York City Transit information management modernization project. This multi-phase project will help modernize the New York City subway’s operations center. Collins Aerospace is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Collins will upgrade the existing manual system to an intelligence-based computer system in a state-of-the-art data facility that will influence how data is received, stored and then used by the MTA. Once complete, staff will have consistent and timely information regarding service on the system’s lettered lines, such as specific train location and real-time status information which will be displayed on a 10 foot by 166 foot large-scale display at the subway operations center.

The company will provide intelligent data analytics and management tools to monitor, analyze and report on 17 service routes, totaling more than 300 trains, 267 stations and 141 miles of track, to help keep overall operations running smoothly and safely.

“We have worked alongside NYC Transit since the mid-1990s to solve the initial Canarsie communications-based train control deployment and the deployment of NYCT Transit’s first operational train arrival countdown system on the L Line,” said Ken Schreder, senior director, Surface Transportation and Critical Infrastructure Systems for Collins Aerospace. “That knowledge coupled with our vast experience in train control and intelligence-based systems across North America will be very valuable in our execution of this project.”

The work will be completed by Collins at its new offices located in New York City.
